The Kano Hub of the Global Shapers community released eight prisoners in the Kano City by paying their fines. The day started with a meeting between the prison deputy chief warden, Mr. K.U Funtua, members of the Global Shapers Kano Hub, the Director for NGOs of the Kano State, Tijjani Ibrahim Dambazau and reporters.
The Curator of the Kano Hub, Salihu Tanko Yakassai gave the opening remarks, describing the gesture as part of efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the inmates and also help rehabilitating such people by given them a 2nd chance to start over in life and be productive to themselves, their family and community at large. He also stressed the importance of such efforts by individuals and groups, in order to assist those in prison. He thanked the deputy warden and the prison’s officials for the prompt response and cooperation the shapers got during the process. On his part, the representative of the Governor of Kano State, the Director of NGOs spoke on the significance of this historic day, in which youths undertake this important project. The efforts of the Hub will be appreciated in the society, and are also in sync with the great traditional values of Kano; for the privileged to help the less fortunate.
The prison, he said, is a place for justice but also a character rehabilitation center, adding that Inmates are our kin and brethren and so he thanked the hub for a very important gesture. The Hub also made a donation of food and other sundry items to the Prison.
